Brim CAD

Brim CAD is a CAD app for things you print. Everything is in millimetres, Z is up, and the plate under the model is your printer's bed. What sits on it is what comes out. It is built for parts that have to fit other parts: a gear on a shaft, a lid on a case, a screw in a hole. You type the numbers, the app builds the part, and your slicer gets a watertight file at the right size. START FROM A SHAPE • 36 shapes, each with its own picture in the gallery: blocks, tubes, threads, springs, knurled knobs, vases and lettering. • Gears, sprockets, belt pulleys, chains, ratchets, cams, splines, worm drives and augers, built from module, teeth and pitch. • Name ornaments, snowflakes, star shapes and radial patterns. • Panels and fittings: vent grilles, insert bosses, print-in-place hinges and ball joints, encoder discs, fans and impellers. • 15 ready-made projects: a case with a lid and screw bosses, a hose adapter, a fit-test coupon, a sundial for where you live, a lithophane, a QR code plate, a jigsaw and more. • A shape keeps its numbers. Reopen it later and change 20 mm to 22 mm instead of drawing it again. WORK EXACTLY • Every drag lands on the snap step. Start a drag and type a number to move by exactly that much. • A ruler, dimensions around the selection, saved measurements, and guides you can move parts to. • Look inside a part through a guide plane without cutting it. CHANGE A BODY • Add, subtract and intersect bodies. • Fillet or chamfer an edge, push and pull a face, cut ISO clearance holes for screws. • Write on a face, texture it, cast a cavity, make a body lighter, repeat it in a row or round a circle, mirror and align. • Draw a sketch and extrude, revolve or sweep it. Make a cookie cutter, a stamp, a stencil or a shadow sculpture from a drawing. • Trace a photo or a drawing into an outline, and model over a reference picture you have calibrated to size. KNOW IT WILL PRINT • Overhangs steeper than your limit turn red. • Before You Print checks for open surfaces, faces that cross, parts off the bed, parts too big for your printer and walls thinner than the nozzle. • A part too big for the bed splits into equal pieces, pinned back together. Pins, tongues, dovetails and snap fits join any two bodies. • Fit clearance, shrinkage and a chamfer for elephant's foot are settings, and a fit-test coupon tells you the right numbers for your own printer. IN AND OUT • Open in your slicer in one click: Bambu Studio, Orca, PrusaSlicer or whatever you use. • Export 3MF, STL, OBJ and USDZ. 3MF keeps the unit, the names, the colours and where each part sits on the bed. • Import STL, 3MF, OBJ, USDZ, PLY and SVG. • Quick Look previews and thumbnails of your projects in the Finder. • A part library for the brackets and knobs you make again and again, and presets for the numbers you always use. The built-in manual takes you in ten chapters from your first part to the keys and gestures, and says plainly what the app does not do. Brim CAD works on meshes, the same thing your slicer reads. There is no parametric history and no constraint solver, and that is on purpose: it is made to be learned in an evening.
